I am only just researching the idea of living a Buddisht life as I currently crave some form of spiritual awareness and understanding.

But so far I have come to the conclusion that he is only speaking of those that are following The Eight and The Ten Precepts - "Those who make the attempt are those who wish to experience the disciplined life of renunciation lived by member of the Order." (http://alturl.com/tysp)

But people who are living by only the five precepts are fine to have sex as long as it is not termed as 'Sexual Misconduct'. I think that just basically means that both parties consent and you have to intention to bring physical or mental harm to that person.

That is just my way of seeing it anyway. =]

Emotions flow and we can do little to change this.
What we can control is how we react to feelings and emotions.
Controlling your response to anger as an example would likely not be considered "denial".

It's not realistic to expect laypeople to be chaste. But I think to chastity is necessary for enlightmenment. "Bodily desires are the greatest of evils". Desire and attachment is the cause of suffering. This is fundamental Buddhist philosophy. Sex and romantic love is egoistic attachment, let's be honest here. Acceptable for laypeople but the serious bhodisattva would be obliged to avoid them.

I've just discovered your blog site. As I am interested in adaption of Buddhism to Western culture I expect to enjoy visiting here in the future.

Note: I've been a Soto Buddhist householder for over 40 years. Studied under Suzuki at the Bush St. Zendo in San Francisco back in the 60's. Married by Soto Bishop at the Hewitt St. Zendo in L.A. Studied oriental philosophy and religion at graduate level, before shifting to law. Now retired from civil service to New Mexico where I write and paint.

I think that denial leads to our dark side, whether it is denial of sex or anything else. I agree with the idea that overindulgence can lead to trouble as well. I feel that we are living this life to experience it, and to deny ourselves part of the experience of life is to deny life itself. I think that people should trust their own inner guidance over some book or some guru.

Regardless of who HHDL was speaking to, the Buddha was celibate wasn't he? Most of the great Indian pundit such as Nagarjuna, Candrakirti, Aryeadeva were celibate too. So why are you so surprised by this, as celibacy plays a large role in the tradition. Just because you don't like this fact doesn't mean it isn't true.

Also, we practitioners must, at some point, transcend sex. Sure, we can't all do it at once but, the fact remain, if you are attached to experiencing the release of seminal fluid, you will not experience Buddhahood.

I, for one, will have to wait until my next life before trying ;)

I feel that realizing how lyrics effect you is often under appreciated. Words have power and especially if you hear/sing a song with feeling. Listen to a happy song when you are depressed and you will start being 'happy'.

I just punched in Momentary Glimpses in Google as the best words I could find to describe what happens to me, and has happened to me quite a few times in my adult life...and I found this site...I get a very peaceful glimpse into a peaceful earth it seems, without the worries and on a couple of occasions I've been able to momentarily incorporate it into what I'm doing at the time..usually driving...it feels like even though I've travelled that road many times, I'll feel like I'm in a different country or city...a sense of freedom from life comes and it's a big vacation from thought or anxiety. Sometimes, if I'm in the passenger seat I'll go into that state and an answer as to how the world works will suddenly come clear to me..yet I can't put it properly into words because words are not descriptive enough to explain it. Alot of it has to do with our literal connectedness to each other and every living thing,,which everything is a living thing..and the intricate workings of things..Please let me know if anyone reads this because I'd love to try to explain to someone out there...

Perhaps it would make more sense from the perspective that in Peirre we have less variability of options. This is particulary evident, I believe, in terms things that support personal maturation beyond a given level of ego-development (as seen through the lense of SDi, Lovenger's work, Torbert, Wilber's Intergal theory, etc.) When all that is offered is meat, the craving for bread is bound to rise. ;-)
